WHAT IS STEPPING
Its the partner dance that is exclusive that is performed primarily
in Chicago.
"Swing, Bop & Hand Dance & Chicago Steppin"h explores
partner dance as an African American social dance dating back to the
Lindy Hop created by Shorty Snowden in 1927. Various urban
partner dances and people who continue their regional dances as the
dances of their youth through today -- dances such as DC Hand Dance
(formerly known as Jitterbug or Fast Dancing), The Philly Bop, Chicago
Steppin (formerly known as the Chicago Bop), Baltimore Hand Dance and
Norfolk Swing.
Steppin, derivative of The Ring-Shout, The Cakewalk, The Jitterbug, The Swing, The Offtime, The Bop, and The New Bop, often referred to as Hand dancing, Ballin, and The Swing Out in other places out side of Chicago, consisting of partners dancing in synchronization to a 6 or 8 count beat to smooth sounds of Jazz, Soul, Funk, R&B, Neo Soul, or Rapp music, attire consist of a form of rag time, black tie, and modern fashion designs twisted into a unique style of contemporary designs better known as Steppers Sharp, very popular in Chicago's African American communities, a dance of unity and positive atmosphere, currently enjoyed by people from all walks of American society from New York to California.
With R. Kelley's song, it has put Stepping on the national radar only
because its R. Kelley and the young people have embraced the dance.
My thought is that if R. Kelley had not done a song with the phrase
"Steppin" in it, That now has the country on a mission to
learn this dance.
Today, Steppin' isl danced to Oldies But Goodies and contemporary
R&B .
DJ LJ the DJ is bringing Stepping to the Bay Area, by way of music and
having Chicago "transplants" to the area teach Steppin.
All African American partner dances should continue through the
generations, we are committed to bringing Steppin to San Francisco.
